When I read Martinelli’s mailing earlier today, I was outraged.
My name is Phillip Landrigan, and I was a named partner in the law firm of Lunney, Landrigan & Murtagh for five years, and I know for a fact that this mailing and those accusations are utter and complete nonsense.
John Murtagh never took a dime from Bob Lunney. Period.
Peddling that or any of Lunney’s false accusations as if they were fact is a sleazy campaign trick.
John Murtagh is a decent, honest guy, and this kind of sleazy attack, three days before an election, is typical of the Martinelli machine. Shame on them.
Don’t be fooled by such sleazy politics days before the Primary.
Join me in supporting John Murtagh for Mayor in Tuesday’s Republican Primary.
Thank you.

Today we mourn the loss of Yonkers resident Sgt. Edward Frank, who was killed in Afghanistan yesterday.
Sgt. Frank, 26, the married father of three, learned that his unit was under attack and went to help. He was killed by a roadside bomb.
An infantryman, Frank, had served two previous tours in Iraq. He won two Army Commendation Medals, two Army Achievement Medals, the Meritorious Unit Commendation, and the Iraq and Afghanistan Campaign Medals.
We extend our deepest condolences to Sgt. Frank’s family and friends, and offer our eternal gratitude for the sacrifice he made on behalf of our nation.

Republican Mayoral candidate John Murtagh said today that yesterday’s election results in the Wisconsin recall were “solidly pro-taxpayer, and not anti-union.”
Murtagh said, “Voters in Wisconsin and across the country feel the same way people here in Yonkers do: they respect the great job our city workers do, but believe everyone has to share in the belt-tightening needed in the current economy. It’s about protecting taxpayers and saving jobs.”
The Republican Mayoral designee noted that, “This vote was a slap in the face to greedy union bosses, not their hardworking and dedicated membership. There is a distinct difference, and Wisconsin voters proved it yesterday.”
Murtagh has drawn fire from union leaders for calling for pension reform, and end to last-in, first out (LIFO), and a repeal of the Triborough Amendment, which keeps union contract requirements in place even after those contracts have long expired.

The other day a Yonkers school teacher, Mark Pekowsky, wrote an op-ed in the Journal News accusing the Mayor and his “Republican minions” of short-changing the Yonkers’ schools in this years’ budget. I guess when he went after “Republican minions” Mr. Pekowsky was ignoring the fact that as many Democrats voted for the budget as Republicans. The vote was unanimous, three Republicans and three Democrats with the fourth Democrat absent.
More likely, Mr. Pekowsky, a union and Democratic Party activist, was really just showing his own left-leaning Democratic bias… the bias that’s says the solution to every problem is spending more money and, in the case of the schools, spending more and more money regardless of outcomes or the benefit to the students.
In reality, averaged over the last eight years, city funding to the schools has increased over 5% annually. That’s your tax dollars and mine. Meanwhile, the Democratic governor and Yonkers Democratic representatives in Albany have let our state aid be slashed, this year by tens of millions of dollars.
The fact is that since 2008, while our school enrollment has increased some 10%, our per pupil state aid has not increased one nickel. In other words, in real dollars, aid for every child in the Yonkers schools has been cut.
In fact, at the same time our aid from New York State was being cut, one of Yonkers own Democratic Assemblymen said the real problem was that Yonkers’ property taxes were too low. That’s right, Yonkers’ Assemblyman said you just need to pay more taxes…problem solved.
Of course, just as important as how much money we spend on education is how we spend it. What results do the taxpayers see for their tax dollars and what kind of education are we giving the students? With only about 63% of students graduating our high schools in four years, I think the answer is that we’re not delivering on our taxpayers’ investment and we’re short-changing vulnerable students and parents.
That’s why, in addition to proper state funding, I’ve talked about real substantive reforms and a real restructuring of the Yonkers school system. Reforms that would give parents a choice in their child’s education and a real voice in how the public schools are run. Reforms that would reward and promote the many great teachers in the schools while demanding accountability from the rest. Reforms that would hold administrators at every level responsible for delivering a meaningful education and reforms that would return the unions to their rightful role, advocating fairly and responsibly for their members, not holding Yonkers parents, students and taxpayers hostage.

Few words have changed human history the way Thomas Jefferson did with the Declaration of Independence. We celebrate the vision of the Founding Fathers, and offer praise and thanks to the men and women of our armed forces, whose continued sacrifices keep us free.

Anywhere you go in America today, you will find statues and plaques in honor of those brave citizens who gave their lives in military service.
You’ll find these memorials in every small town and large city, mentioning places like Valley Forge, Gettysburg, Kettle Hill, St. Mihiel, Palau, Normandy, Inchon, Hue, Rumaila, Tora Bora, Fallujah.
Often you’ll see a list of names of the brave fallen.
But none of these plaques or statues — or all of them together — can truly convey what these brave Americans accomplished.
Their real memorial is all around us, because America and its freedoms are an idea.
And those who gave their lives in service to our country have kept that dream alive.
Today, we salute them and their families, and say humbly say, “Thank you.”
